Cheap sunflower oil is often better than bio-oil

Good sunflower oil must be expensive or organic. To this end, the Stiftung Warentest comes after a comparison of 16 and 12 cold-pressed refined sunflower oils, including 13 with the organic label.

"A 'good' sunflower oil is already for 1.49 euros to have per liter, the same amount of 'defective' bio-oil from sunflower seeds costs however 8.50 euros," it says in the November issue of the magazine "test". The prices of the tested oils, a total of 1.49 to 9.60 euros per liter.


When cold-pressed organic oils, the tester presented more frequently found errors. Typical of them is a nutty, polynuclear aromatic. But five had had an easy peel-moldy or burnt smell and taste.

For all refined oils, the testers found, however pollutants that may arise in the refining. In addition, the experts tested how well supply the oils with vitamin E. Overall, 13 of the 28 sections per test oils "good" or "satisfactory", while one each was rated as "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory".

In Germany about one in four sold edible oil is a sunflower. For frying is not any. Stiftung Warentest, only six of the tested oils good frying.
